C. B. "Babe" Whorton

Sweetwater - C. B. "Babe" Whorton, 74, lifelong Roscoe and Sweetwater resident and retired cotton buyer, died at 5:57 a.m. Tuesday in Simmons Memorial Hospital after a brief illness.

Services will be held at 4 p.m. Wednesday at First United Methodist Church. The Rev. Newton Starnes, pastor, will officiate. Burial will be in Garden of Memories, directed by Cate-Spencer Funeral Home.

Born Dec. 2, 1900 in Roscoe, Mr. Whorton was the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. D. B. Whorton, pioneer Roscoe residents. He was graduated from Roscoe High School and attended the University of Texas and Arlington State College.

He married Rita Risinger on May 30, 1919 in Snyder. Mr. Whorton was a farmer in the Roscoe area and moved to Sweetwater in 1936.

Mr. Whorton was a member of the First United Methodist Church where he was a member of the Building Committee and the Board of Stewards. He also was a member of the Masonic Lodge and a past exalted ruler of the Elks Lodge.

He was former chairman of the Sweetwater Hospital Board and had been a member of the Sweetwater School Board where he served on the Tax Equalization Board.

Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Mary Ann Forester of Dallas; two sons, Dan of Richmond, Va. and Don of Dallas; a sister, Mrs. Maurine Redway of Dallas; five grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews, including Mrs. Annellee Hooks of Abilene.

Pallbearers will be Horatio Bardwell, Sam Reeves, Dugan Dailey, Clyde Jay, R. H. Whorton, Jr., Henry Bennett, Pat Gerald, Milton Zetzman, Audrey Ballew and Ed Ponder.

Honorary pallbearers will be Rev. Tim Guthrie, Dr. R. L. Price and A. C. Smith
