Lifelong friend of the Ellis Family

Note from G. Ellis: Beaver's General Store, 646 Mocksville Hwy, Statesville, NC; a true landmark.
I heard about Beaver's Store all my life, but don't remember much about Rex, himself. My parents rented an apartment from Rex next to the Store. I no doubt saw him many times, but wouldn't recognize him, if he was looking me in the face. However, my father and his family knew him and the Beaver family all their lives. When I was a kid and visited my grandparents, Grandpa Ellis would take me in his old Studebaker to Beaver's Store to get ice cream. Besides being old, grandpa was crippled so driving wasn't easy for him. I can see my grandpa with his rosy cheeks smiling, as we licked away at the huge homemade ice cream melting in the hot summer breeze. My uncle Harold Ellis would go to the store and sit for hours with his friends, catching up on news.

Much later in life, dad and I dropped in Beaver Store to get a moon pie & RC Cola. As we were talking, we heard a voice that sound familiar. From around the corner came my uncle Harold with his cowboy hat, "Well good gravy, I thought I heard Lynn's voice," he said. Harold had not seen his brother, Lynn, my dad, in years. It was a memorable day. If you wanted a good moon pie or oatmeal cake, and a bottle of pop to wash it down, there was nothing like a good stop at Beaver's General Store. The store as it looked then and in the contemporary photos is different. Of course it was a newer building, well taking care of with no front covered area.
