James R. Abel, a well-known farmer, died Tuesday afternoon, May 23, 1922, at his home in the southwest part of Halbert township after a long illness from cancer. He was born August 10, 1860 being at the time of his death 61 years, 9 months and 13 days of age. He was a son of Josiah & Sarah E. Abel and was born and reared and spent almost his entire life time in and near the community where he died.

In the year 1880 February 9th he was married to Florence A. White and to this union nine children were born five having preceded him to the great beyond. The wife and four daughters survive him. They are Mrs. Festus Troutman of Shoals, Mrs. Phil Morris of Mitchell, Mrs. Lum Bateman of Lincoln, Illinois, and Mrs. Casper Porter of Mitchell. Besides his wife and daughters he leaves to mourn their loss seven granddaughters and two grandsons; two brothers, W. L. Abel, of Belle, Missouri and Joseph B. Abel, of Daviess county; and one sister, Mrs. T. E. Brown, of this city.

He was of a kind and loving disposition. He loved his relatives and friends. He planned just a few weeks prior to his death to have a reunion of the Abel families so he might see them all once more. He was a member of the Christian church and during the long months of severe suffering always put his trust in God. Saying his will be done and when the end was almost at hand over and over again "Lord I am ready." Funeral services were conducted at his home by the Rev. William Salmon on Thursday of last week after which the remains were laid to rest in the Abel cemetery.
