Capt. John Bailey Cemetery
The second family cemetery in the Montsweag area is that of Capt. John Bailey. Capt. John Bailey came to Woolwich from Weymouth Mass. before June 27, 1761. He owned the property on the Montsweag Road later known as the Lincoln Bailey or the Henry Butler place. The cemetery is located on a hill, on the east end of the property overlooking Montsweag Bay. Woods have overgrown the field that contains the family lot. Capt. John Bailey was an officer in the Revolutionary War. Ethel Bailey, a great, great-granddaughter, joined the DAR through his service record. Many years ago she was instrumental in fencing the cemetery and placing a DAR bronze plaque on his grave. Clarence Bailey, a great, great-grandson of Capt. John, assisted Ethel Bailey in this project. Buried here are Capt. John Bailey who died July 29, 1813, and his wife Ann (Memoy) Bailey, who died Jan. 17, 1828. It is not known who else might be buried here. Jesse Bailey, youngest son of Capt. John and Ann Bailey, was the next owner of this property. He and his wife, Eunice (Gould) Bailey, had a daughter, Eunice, who was born Nov 16, 1801, and died July 4, 1822. Her death is recorded by Rev. Josiah Winship. She is undoubtedly buried with her grandparents. Her name does not appear on any other cemetery record.
