C.D. Norman was born to Benjamin and Henrietta Norman on February 28th, 1924 in Gainesville, Texas. His desire to lead a meaningful life began early; he earned the designation of Eagle Scout and lived the rest of his life according to the Boy Scout Oath. AT 17, C.D. enlisted in the Naval Aviation Cadet Program and upon completion, joined the Marine Corps. He attained the rank of Captain and served in Peiping during WWII. He stayed in the Reserves while attending Texas A&M, and his studies were interrupted when he was called up to serve in Korea. He joined VMF-312, the Checkerboard squadron. He finally graduated with a BS in civil engineering, class of ’45. C.D. was a risk taker, so he traded a career in the Marine Corps for the West Texas oil business. He was an independent oil operator for dozens of wells near where he was raised in Olney, aka “the Big O”. He married the love of his life, Lenore Joan Rogal, in 1953 and together they raised four children, seven dogs, two cats, some horses and hamsters. Amongst his many adventures and accomplishments, C.D. flew Corsairs, piloted sailboats, authored 5 books, and played tennis with Lenore in an Irving league. On July 1st 2011, C.D. Norman was cleared for his final take off. He is survived by his devoted wife Lenore, children Debbie, Audrey, Susan and Bill, and four-legged companions Atlas and Bambi. Memorial services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, July 9, 2011 at Brown’s Memorial Funeral Home Chapel. In lieu of flowers, the family would be grateful for a modest contribution to the Semper Fi Fund.
