REV ALBERT JAMES. “FATHER AL” HARTLAGE JR.
The Rev. Albert James “Fr. Al” Hartlage Jr., 85, of Fairfield, died Monday, June 6, 2016, at his residence. He was born July 14, 1930, in Louisville to Albert James and Loraine Schick Hartlage Sr. He attended St. Denis Parish where he was baptized, attended high school at St. Mary’s, attended St. Meinrad Seminary, and was ordained into the priesthood May 26, 1956.
He was an associate pastor at St. Columba from 1956-1967; a chaplain in the U.S. Army from 1967-1987 where he served two tours in Vietnam and retired as a Lt Colonel. He served as Chaplin for Frazier Rehab, Kosair Children’s Hospital, St. Joseph Children’s Home Rectory from 1987-1989, and St. Mary and Elizabeth Hospital from 1989-1993.
He was the associate pastor at St. Stephen Martyr from 1993-1996. From 1996-2000 he served as associate pastor of St. Michael in Fairfield and All Saints in Taylorsville. He retired in residence at St. Michael from 2000 to present.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Loraine Schick, his father and stepmother, Albert James and Klarer Stuber Hartlage Sr.; ane one brother, Carl Hartlage.
He is survived by six brothers, Bert (Mary Jane) Hartlage, Delphin (Ethel) Hartlage, Earl (Donna) Hartlage, Gerard (Alejandra) Hartlage, Michael Hartlage, all of Louisville, and Floyd (Shirley) Hartlage of Goshen; his aunt, Anita Paulin of Louisville; as well as many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews also survive.
The Mass of Christian Burial is 11 a.m. Friday, June 10, 2016, at St. Michael Catholic Church in Fairfield with the Rev. Bill Hammer officiating. Burial is in the St. Michael Church Cemetery.
Visitation is 3-8 p.m. Thursday, June 9, 2016, at the Houghlin-Greenwell Funeral Home, 1475 New Shepherdsville Road, Bardstown, and 10-11 a.m. Friday at the church. A prayer service is Thursday evening at the funeral home.
The Houghlin-Greenwell Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
