Vashti Garrett Phelps, 78, of Appomattox, went to be with the Lord, Monday, November 23, 2009 at 4:00 am, at Lynchburg Health and Rehabilitation Center due to natural causes. Born in Nottoway County, July 7, 1931, she was one of eleven children born to the late Chap Raymond Garrett and Georgia Gobble Garrett. She was 15 years old when she married the late John D. Phelps, who passed away 29 years ago. There was not a day that went by that she did not talk about the love they shared and how she missed him. Vashti had a strong faith in God that she instilled in everyone she met and was a member of Calvary Cross Baptist Church. She is survived by one sister, Geneva Garrett Talley of Forest; two children, Edward David Phelps of Pamplin and Patricia Shelton and Roger Pippin of Arrington; six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren, Sandra Phelps of Appomattox, David Wayne Phelps and Christine and their children Taylor and Zachary of Pamplin, Charles E. Phelps and Jessica and their children Jennifer and Michaela of Pamplin, John Kress and his son Darren, Calvin Kress all of Evergreen, and Lee Roy Shelton of Atlanta, GA; and several nieces, nephews, and family friends. She was preceded in death by five brothers, Raymond Garrett, Robert Alex Garrett, Jerry Garrett, Frank Garrett, and Leroy Kelly Garrett and four sisters, Edna Holloran, Barbara Jennings, Betty Jane Garrett, and Brenda Wright. She will be sadly missed by her family, friends and everyone who loved her so much. Special thanks to her roommate, Phyllis Barnes of Stonewall for the special friendship that they built throughout their time together at Lynchburg Health and Rehabilitation Center. There could never have been a better match for roommates. Thank you also to all the staff members at LHRC for the wonderful care and love she was given while under your care. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 pm, Wednesday, November 25, 2009 at Robinson Funeral Home by the Rev. Jeff Worley with burial following in the church cemetery.
