LAVERNE BERGNER REPORTED MISSIING SINCE JUNE 6
Former Eagle Sports Star was with Infantry division on Okinawa
Mr. and Mrs. Ray Bergner were notified Sunday that their son, Pvt. Laverne Bergner, has been reported as missing in action on Okinawa since June 6.
The official war department message informed the parents that additional information will follow.
Pvt. Bergner, 19, was a member of an infantry division. He went into service last September and was trained at Camp Fannin, Texas. After a brief period at Fort Ord, Calif., he went overseas in January and for awhile was in the Marianas.
The last letter from him received by his parents was written on may 27 from Okinawa.
Bergner was graduated from Weatherford High School in 1944. During his days in Weatherford High School he was an outstanding basketball and baseball player. He was a high-scoring forward on the Eagle Basketball team and with his brother, Doyle formed a very effective battery for the baseball team.
His parents live north of Weatherford.

LAVERNE BERGNER KILLED IN ACTION
Pfc. Laverne Bergner, 19 was killed in action on Okinawa June 6, the war department has notified his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Ray Bergner. Mr. and Mrs. Bergner had previously been notified that their son was missing in action.
The war department telegram stating that he had been killed in action was received here Wednesday evening of last week.
Pfc. Bergener (sic), a graduate of Weatherford High School with the class of 1944, went into service last September.
