Ernest Walker Barnes was the oldest child of William Walker Barnes (1851-1932) and Elizabeth "Lizzie" Ellen Miller Barnes (d. 1893) of Larue County, Kentucky who later settled in Meade County, Kentucky. William was a son of Armstead Barnes (1809-1854) and Elizabeth Dowell Barnes (1814-1896) who raised their family of 12 children near Meadville in Meade County, Kentucky, once located nearby. Armstead Barnes was a son of Elijah Barnes (1777-1845) and Rachel Willcocks Barnes (1774-1840) who settled near Bardstown, Nelson County, Kentucky.

Ernest W. Barnes married Minnie Lou Crady on May 13, 1903. Their known children are;
1. Elizabeth Barnes, born ca. 1904 in Kentucky. Married a Mr. Despain.
Note that an Elizabeth B. Despain is buried in Red Hill Cemetery in Hodgenville, Larue Co., Kentucky.
2. Eloise Edelin Barnes, born ca. 1907 in Kentucky.
3. William Robert Barnes, (1909-1981). Married Nancy Ann Fisher (1913-2004).
4. John F. Barnes, born 1913

6. Catherine Barnes, born 1919, married a Mr. Thompson

Ernest W. Barnes may have also been a minister at First Cedar Creek Baptist Church in Nelson County, Kentucky since an E. W. Barnes was listed as the minister there from 1914-1918 and Ernest and Minnie Barnes had two sons that were born in Nelson County in 1915 and 1916.

Amazingly, at the age of 42, and married with five children, Ernest is listed as registering for the draft during World War 1 at Hodgenville, Larue County, Kentucky, and is shown as follows; Ernest Walker Barnes, age 42, born June 12, 1876, occupation: Ordained Minister of the Gospel, permanent residence Lyons, Larue County, nearest relation: Mrs. E. W. Barnes. Ernest was listed as being medium height and build, dark hair, balding.

Niece Frances (Barnes) Lynch said that she remembered visiting her uncle Ernest Barnes' small farm located on the river in Lebanon, Marion County, Kentucky. Lebanon is located about 20 miles due east of Gleanings. She also said Ernest's family probably depended on fishing from this river for some of their food.

At the time of Minnie Barnes' death in 1932, Minnie and Ernest were living in Lyons, Larue County, Kentucky.
