William was a son of Armstead Barnes (1809-1854) and Elizabeth Dowell Barnes (1814-1896) who raised their family of 12 children near Meadville in Meade County, Kentucky, once located nearby. Armstead Barnes was a son of Elijah Barnes (1777-1845) and Rachel Willcocks Barnes (1774-1840) who settled near Bardstown, Nelson County, Kentucky.
Ernest W. Barnes married Minnie Lou Crady on May 13, 1903. Their known children are;

At the time of Minnie Barnes' death in 1932, Minnie and Ernest were living in Lyons, Larue County, Kentucky.
