Andrew Bailey was born about 1846, Georgia, to Ephraim and Amanda Ray Bailey. He moved with his family to Mississippi in 1853, settling in DeSoto County in the Greenleaf Community. Youthful though he was, during the Civil War, he served as a private with Company L of the 24th Mississippi Infantry. While in Virginia, he met and married Katie D. Gilbert on 25 May 1879. The family lived in Virginia until their son Bryan Lee contracted tuberculosis in the early 1900s, they moved to Coke County where it was hoped he would regain his health. Andrew purchased 40 acres from his brother-in-law Holiday Hayley. Andrew, Katie and Katie’s sister Mattie Gilbert transferred their membership to the Hayrick Methodist Church October 15, 1907. They lived and farmed in the Hayrick Community until Andrew died April 23, 1910. Shortly after, Katie and her sister returned to Virginia. Andrew and Bryan are buried in unmarked graves in the Hayrick Cemetery.
