José María Dario Pico y Vastida was born about 1756 at San Javier de Cabazán, Río Piaxtla, Sinaloa, Nueva España (México). He was the son of Felipe Santiago de la Cruz Pico and María Jacinta Vastida. José enlisted as a soldado de cuera (leatherjacket) and was posted to the Presidio of San Diego, Alta California, where he married Maria Eustaquia Gutierrez y Arballo in the Presidio Chapel on May 10, 1789 (SD Marriage 00320). José retired as a sergeant and was posted as the commander of the escoltas at Mission San Gabriel. He died at the mission and was buried in the mission cemetery on September 5, 1819 (SG Death 04183).
