William Arthur Nichols Jr., age 78, of Mountain City, Tennessee, passed away at the James H. Quillen VA Nursing Home on Sunday, May 22, 2016. He was born on July 25, 1937 to the late William Arthur Nichols Sr. and Bonnie Dickens Nichols. In addition to his parents, William was preceded in death by sisters: Edna Osborne, Ruth Miller, Mildred Graybeal and infant sister, Mary Grace Nichols; brothers: Billy Nichols and John Nichols.

William joined the United States Army at Fort Campbell in the 'Big Red One'. He retired following 20 years of honorable service. During his career, he served in Vietnam, Germany and Korea. He was also a member of the Tennessee Defense Force, serving as Chaplain.

After his retirement, William moved back to Mountain City, Tennessee in 1974. He had several hobbies but two of his favorites were computers and C.B. Radios. He was known as 'Tree Topper'. He also learned how to repair radios. William also loved teaching and taught at Caldwell Community College of Boone.

He was a member of First Christian Church.

William is survived by his wife of 62 years, Dorothy McCulloch Nichols; daughters and sons-in-laws: Sandra and husband Stuart Rambo of Butler, TN, Nancy Lewis and husband Gary of Mountain City, TN, Barbara Miller of Butler, TN, Deborah Greene and husband David of Mountain City, TN; son and daughter-in-law, David Nichols and wife Melissa of Elizabethton, TN; sister, Lois Nichols Hagans and husband Danny of Coatesville, PA; sister-in-law, Charlotte Nichols of Kernersville, NC; grandchildren: Gary Ray Lewis Jr. and wife Michelle, Tammy Bunton and husband David, Elizabeth Ann Baker and husband Chris, Charles Dyson, Christopher Pennington, Cindy Kern and husband David, Mindy Phillips, Michael Pennington, Amanda Baker and husband Jeff, William 'Bill' Rambo and wife Caitlin and Tyler Nichols; several great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Graveside Service and Interment with Military Rites will be conducted at 2:30 p.m. Friday, May 27, 2016 at the Mountain Home National VA Cemetery, Mountain Home, Tennessee with Rev. Clarence Phillips officiating. Military rites will be accorded by the Johnson County Honor Guard. Pallbearers will be grandsons and great grandsons. Honorary pallbearers are James Arthur Osborne, Shane Mann, Porter Stout, David Miller and Danny Hagans.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Johnson County Honor Guard, c/o Terry Reece, 123 Volunteer Lane, Mountain City, TN 37683.

The family would like to express their appreciation and gratitude to Dr. Nick Mungo, Dr. Heidi Storer, nursing staff of C1 Ward and Hospice of the CLC at the James H. Quillen VA Medical Center for all of their exceptional care.
