DEATH OF MRS. LUMPKIN.

Wednesday morning about 11 o'clock, Mrs. Margaret P. Lumpkin, wife of Dr. I. A. Lumpkin, died at the family residence on Wabash avenue. The deceased had been in delicate health for several years, but it was not until about a year ago that her real condition was revealed by the examination of a specialist. He pronounced her case cancer of the womb, and stated that no medical treatment was possible; that she might live several months, but the end was certain. Still her friends did not dispair, but up to only a few weeks continued to hope for her recovery. It was written otherwise, however, and she gradually grew weaker until the end was apparent. During the past few months she had been a terrible sufferer, and no one who had witnessed her anguish would have asked any prolongation of her life. It brought relief to herself and a thankfulness to her friends that she was at rest. While mourning her sad end, they rejoiced that she had passed into eternal rest. The remains will be taken to Shelbyville to-day for burial, prior to which a short service will be held at the house.

Mrs. Margaret P. Lumpkin was born in Shelbyville on the 27th of November, 1845. She was the daughter of H. F. Cutler, one of the oldest and most highly respected citizens of that county. On the 24th December, 1867, she was married to Dr. I. A. Lumpkin and of that union one child was born, William, who survives.

About seven years ago Dr. and Mrs. Lumpkin moved to this city where they have since made their home. Her sweet disposition and amiable character soon won her many friends, and although her health forbade an active part in society, yet she was never neglected and her friends grew in number as the days increased. She was a loving wife and kind mother. Her home life was beautiful, and her presence was a light. Her loss will be greatly felt by the community, but especially by the husband and son who mourn the loss of the dearest friend on earth. Heaven grant they may find a consolation in their present overpowering grief in the thought that she is enjoying an existence free from the cares and ills of life.

Suggested edit: Margaret, and the rest of her siblings, are listed in her father's probate record in 1865. There is a photo of it listed on his memorial. However, it was two yrs before she married Lumpkin, so she is only listed as "Margaret". The obit was in error in listing her father as "H. F. Cutler". Contributor: Sheri Honeycutt (47874885)
