Joel A. Van Drew, 74, of Hopewell passed away on Sunday, May 29, 2016 at OSF St. Francis Medical Center, Peoria.


He was born on May 29, 1942 in Princeton, the son of Raymond J. and Ruth E. (Arnold) Van Drew. He married Karen S. Meyer on April 22, 1967 at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Sheffield.


Surviving are his wife, Karen Van Drew of Hopewell; a daughter, Jennifer (Peter) Chirchirillo of Hopewell; two grandchildren, Andrew and Ashley Chirchirillo of Hopewell; and a sister, Dolores Van Drew of Buda. He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Michael and a sister, Erin.


Joel was a U.S. Army Veteran serving with the 1st Infantry Division during the Vietnam War from March 1964 to February 1966. He was a member of the Buda American Legion Post #246 and the Chillicothe VFW Post #4999. On September 29, 2015, Joel was honored to visit Washington D.C. war monuments, including The Wall, with the Greater Peoria Area Honor Flight. His daughter was his guardian for the flight.


Joel worked for IDOT for 25 years, retiring as a Lead Worker in 2003.


He was a member of St. Edward Catholic Church in Chillicothe.


Joel was a coach in Buda for many years, coaching Little and Babe Ruth Leagues. He was also a registered umpire with the IHSA. Joel spent thirty years serving the Village of Buda, first serving as a trustee on the Village Board and then as Mayor for four terms. He was elected to serve as a Democratic Precinct Committeeman in Bureau County for many years. Joel was an EMT with the Buda Ambulance. He was also an EMT with Lacon-Sparland Rescue 52 after moving to Hopewell. He enjoyed golfing, fishing, bowling, watching the Green Bay Packers play, and spending time with his grandchildren.


A funeral service will be held at Weber-Hurd Funeral Home in Chillicothe on Friday, June 3rd, 2016 at 11:00 AM. A visitation will be held the night before on Thursday evening, June 2, 2016 from 4-7:00 PM at the funeral home. Interment of ashes will be held at the Chillicothe City Cemetery on Tuesday, June 7, 2016 at 11:00 AM with Military Honors. Memorials may be made to Greater Peoria Honor Flight or to the A.R.K. No Kill Animal Shelter in Lacon.
