The British had taken Philadelphia eight days before this battle, after which the British general Howe divided his troops. He had great tenacity at Germantown, 7 miles NE of Philadelphia. The Americans were determined; but the fight lasted longer than they anticipated. In the end, Gen. Howe prevailed. Susanna Strother Hawkins was left a widow with a young son, Moses Hawkins, Jr.
