James Conner was born in 1818 into a hillbilly family from Virginia. Sadly, he ended up on the "county poor farm" in Nodaway County, Missouri. The county farm was a place for the old and enfeebled who had no other options. James had lived with his son John in Iowa but then returned to Missouri for some reason. James died on December 14, 1904, at the age of 86. He was listed as John Sr., despite having an older brother with that name, on the 1900 census This was a mistake, the result of confusion or sloppiness by the census taker. His body was likely donated to a medical school for study, a common practice for residents of the county poor farm upon their death.
