Herbert H. Adams, of Mesilla, New Mexico died in his home Friday, July 11, 2008 after an extended battle with cancer.
Herb was born in 1923 in Providence, Rhode Island, to Howard R. Adams and Edith C. Wood.
He was preceded in death by his first wife and mother of his children, Beatrice Berard, and their toddler son, Charles.
He was survived by his wife of 21 years, Carol, of the home, his daughters Abigail Brotherton of Danville, Virginia, Jennifer Murphy, of Park Ridge, Illinois and his seven grandchildren.
Herb attended Cushing Academy in Massachusetts and in the fall of 1940 enrolled in Union College in Schenectady, New York. World War II interrupted his college attendance and on November 1942 he enlisted in The Army Enlisted Reserve Corps and was called to active duty in June of 1943 where he served his country honorably in the South Pacific as an infantry platoon sergeant with the 35th Regiment of the 25th Division in the Luzon campaign to liberate the Philippines. He received the Bronze Star for his combat service.
On completion of his undergraduate studies at Union, Herb began a 40 year career in international marketing which entailed extended residences in Venezuela, Argentina, Canada, the Netherlands, and travel to 76 countries. He enjoyed learning about other people and cultures and sharing the many interesting tales of his travels with friends and neighbors.
After retiring as Director of International Operations for Graber Industries in Madison, Wisconsin, Herb and Carol spent many months sailing the Atlantic and inter coastal waterways, ultimately settling in Bradenton, Florida, and subsequently moving to Las Cruces. During his retirement, Herb enjoyed volunteer work, participating, with Carol, in International Executive Service Corps projects in Egypt, The Czech Republic and Zimbabwe. As an avid reader, he was also a dedicated Literacy Volunteer. The Mayflower Society honored Herb with a historian award for his genealogical research in tracing his descent to Mayflower passenger George Soule.
Cremation has taken place, with interment to be at Swan Point Cemetery in Providence, Rhode Island.
Herb’s life was celebrated at St. James Episcopal Church, in Mesilla Park, Fr. Nick Funk officiated.
