John Zachary Clouser

GALVESTON — John Zachary Clouser, 94, lovingly known as “Zeke”, passed away peacefully at home Saturday, May 21, 2016.

Zeke was a BOI, born November 13, 1921, to John Henry Clouser and Hazel Zachary. He was a member of Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Galveston, TX.

He graduated from Holy Rosary High School in 1939, and attended Tuskegee Institute as well as Prairie View College. In 1943, Zeke joined the United States Marine Corps and he served from 1943 to 1965. Zeke was one of the last surviving Founding Fathers of The Montford Point Marine Association; in the midst of World War II — the Marine Corps built a training base for blacks at Montford Point, about five miles from Camp Lejeune near Jacksonville, N.C., where they trained from 1943 — 1949.

He served in the South Pacific, Saipan, Okinawa and many other areas during World War II. Zeke was honored at the U.S. Capitol in Washington with the Congressional Gold Medal which is the country’s highest civilian honor for distinguished achievement made possible by the bill signed by President Obama.

Zeke was a former drill instructor and Master Sergeant. His most cherished memories, honors and achievements are with the United States Marine Corp; The Montford Point Marine Association (Chapter 1), Philadelphia, PA and all the other Montford Point.

Although Zeke was a BOI and came home to be with the Lord as a BOI, he called Philadelphia, PA, home for many years. Special thanks to Shawntal Grant, the Galveston VA Clinic and Sigma Home Health.

Zeke was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Carmel Clouser; special friend, Ruth Mason; brother, Ernest Zachary Clouser.

Zeke is survived by his brother, Gerald Z. Clouser Sr., sister-in-law, Margret Clouser; nieces and nephews, Valerie Clouser-McHenry (Lawrence), Gerald Z. Clouser, Jr. (Gayle), Hazel Clouser Smith (Wilbert), Lorri Carmel Clouser (Cyndi), Johnathan Clouser, Sr., Joel Craig Clouser (Gloria), and Ernest F. Clouser.

Visitation will begin at 8:30 A.M., followed by a rosary service at 9:40 A.M with a funeral mass beginning at 10:00 A.M., on Saturday, May 28, 2016, at Holy Rosary Catholic Church, with Deacon Doug Matthews celebrant. Burial will follow at Calvary Catholic Cemetery in Galveston, Texas
