Georgia Hougaard Davis, of Oxnard, California, died Saturday, September 3, 2011 of natural causes, in the comfort of her home, surrounded by her family. She was 99 years old.
Born in Manti, Utah on June 29, 1912 to Danish Americans John Hougaard and Jessie Christina Anderson, Georgia and her twin sister, Virginia, excelled in school and were fondly regarded by their community. The girls were just one set of six sets of twins on their block. Her father encouraged both of his daughters to pursue life-long education. Georgia earned her Bachelor of Science in Home Economics in 1934 from Brigham Young University. She continued to study and learn new skills throughout her working life. After graduation, she became a teacher and served as director of the school lunch program for the state of Utah.
It was while volunteering at a USO dance, where she was in charge of making sure the GI's didn't spike the punch bowl, that Georgia met her future husband, Richard Alvin Davis. They married in 1946 and moved back to Richard's hometown of Port Hueneme, California. The couple eventually settled in Oxnard, California, to raise their family of five children. Georgia worked as a home economics teacher at Port Hueneme High School for 14 years. She retired in 1974.
In her retirement, she enjoyed her pets, feeding the birds, gardening, watching weekend sports with her husband, and having her children and grandchildren come to visit. She was a lover of the outdoors and took every opportunity to spend time in her garden. She doted on her grandchildren, and extended her immeasurable compassion and concern to friends and neighbors. Her nature was one of softness and grace, and ever the hostess, she put everyone else's needs above her own. Her humor was sharp, witty and playful. Everyone was at ease in her company. Georgia was a rare individual who lived her principles of kindness, compassion and nurturing every day of her life. Those who met and knew her were quite lucky to have such a remarkable spirit in their lives.
Georgia is survived by her husband of 65 years, Richard (Dick) Alvin Davis; her son Michael Davis and his wife Judy; and daughters Storrow Johnson and her husband Wayne; Katherine Mitchell and her husband William; Ann Kimbrell and her husband Steve; Leslie Peterson and her husband Pete; and daughter-in-law Ann Savage Davis of Davis; Grandchildren Matthew Davis and his wife Jenn, and great granddaughter Layla; Ryan Davis and his wife Nikola, and great granddaughter Winter; David and Christina Johnson; Leah Johnson; Erin Mitchell Chaktar and her husband Shawo; Alex and Lara Mitchell; Scott and Wesley Kimbrell; Emily Reeves and her husband Steve, and great granddaughter Abigail and great grandson Ryan; Katie Peterson; nephew John Harder and his wife Annette; niece Elaine Davis; nephew Mark Davis and his wife Terri; and adopted Norwegian daughter Benedicte Hambro and her husband Arnsten.
