He died in Donegal being struck by freight on railroad train, body shipped to Wheeling on B&O RR. He was a farmer, son of George Potter born Maryland and Jane Kimmins/Cummins? on death certificate.
However William appears on the 1860 census West Finley, Washington, PA, with parents George a farmer,and Jane both listed as born Pennsylvania, and with siblings George W 17, Anna J 15, Elsie 13, Junior ED 11, Sophia D 9, Memphis K, 7 and not yet named male 1, all born Penna. A sister Alice age 4 was listed on the 1850 census and is likely Elsie.

William first married Sarah Ann Wolfe, March 26, 1866. They lived in Iowa and had son Ulysses Allen Potter 1868. Living in West Finley, Washington, Pennsylvania by the 1880 census, with children Oscar W, Nancy J, Nora B and Christopher C all born Penna. His wife Sarah died in 1891 Claysville.

His mother Jane appears on the 1870 census Claysville without George but with children George W 27, Fanny J 25, Junior A 20, Memphis K 16, Sophia 14 and John K 11.

Many of his siblings are buried in Claysville Cemetery with his mother. The 1900 census indicates his parents had 10 children, 8 living.

His brother John Kimmins born 1859 died in Arkansas in 1939.
