BELGRADE - Donald F. Bickford, 88, of the West Road, died Monday, May 23, 2016, at his home. He was born in Oxford, Mass. on April 2, 1928, the son of Fred and Helen (Ela) Bickford Jr. Donald attended Westborough High School and graduated from the School of Hard Knocks.

He served his country with the U.S. Army during WWII, stationed in Korea.

Donald was a carpenter and handyman all of his life. He was owner and operator of Bickford Builders and did work at many summer camps at Fosters Point on Long Pond. Donald would often be seen at his "office" at the Sunset Grill in the mornings, and later in the afternoons to play cribbage with his friends. He enjoyed fishing and hunting and was a member of the Biggest Buck Club. In his earlier years, Donald flew a plane and enjoyed going to airshows. He was a member of the Belgrade Lions Club and the Belgrade Fire Department.

He was predeceased by a brother Robert Bickford. He is survived by his wife Marilyn Bickford; two sons, Barry Bickford and Brian Bickford and his wife Gail and two daughters, Virginia "Ginger" Fage and Donna Schertell and her husband Paul; two sisters, Barbara Schyeler and Joyce Wright and her husband Ervin; a stepson, Guido DiPietro, three stepdaughters, Selena Johnson, Naomi Dorr and her husband Erick, and Phoebe DiPietro; 18 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and one great-great- grandson; also several nieces, nephews and cousins.

A graveside service will be held at Pine Grove Cemetery, Belgrade. Arrangements are in the care of Knowlton and Hewins Funeral Home, One Church St., Augusta. (Central Maine Newspapers 5/24/2016)
