Dougherty - Mary Romana Campbell, 99, of Dougherty died Wednesday (Sept. 19, 2007) at the Heritage Care Center in Mason City.
A funeral Mass will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Sept. 24, 2007, at the St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Dougherty with the Rev. James W. Dubert officiating. Burial will be in the St. Patrick's Catholic Cemetery in Dougherty. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday at St. Patrick's School with a Scriptural wake service and rosary at 7 p.m. Memorials may be directed to the Mary Romana Campbell Memorial Fund.
Romana was born on Jan. 28, 1908, at Dougherty, the daughter of John and Loretto (Ormsby) Mullen. She grew up in Dougherty and attended St. Patrick's School, graduating in 1926.
Romana was united in marriage to Manuel "Dutch" J. Campbell on June 5, 1940, at St. Patrick's Church in Dougherty. The happy couple made their home in Mason City where their son, Joseph, was born. In 1946 they purchased the J. Mullen & Sons General Store and moved to Dougherty.
Her husband, Manuel, preceded her in death in 1964. She continued to own and operate Campbell's Store with her brother-in-law, Robert "Smoky" Campbell and her sister, Lorene Murphy, until it was sold in 1981.
Romana enjoyed working in the store and taking care of her customers. She especially enjoyed the children who came into the store and many left with a little candy for the trip home.
Romana enjoyed retirement, remaining in Dougherty until Jan. 13, 2000, when she moved to Heritage Care Center in Mason City.
She was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church, the Catholic Ladies Auxiliary and a Charter member of the Catholic Daughters of America.
She is fondly remembered by her nieces and nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews, special friends, Linda Campbell and Ed Soucek, and the community of Dougherty.
She is survived by her son, Joseph (Dawn) Campbell, of Mason City; five granddaughters; Lori (Todd) Maher, Debra (Chris Roe) Campbell, Patricia (Steve) Linville, all of Colorado, Katherine and Kristin Campbell, Mason City; three great-grandchildren: Quinn and Zoe Maher and Paige Linville; and her dear sister, Lorena Murphy.
Preceding her in death were her parents, John and Loretto (Ormsby) Mullen; her husband, Manuel; and her brothers, Joseph and Leo Mullen.
