Wife of Willis Brewer who died accidentally in 1848 when a tree fell on him. She raised 9 children.

Mahala was said to be the d/o Shadrack Maynard and from family folklore perhaps the first d/o Charity Brewer Hollon who is said to have left a child behind when she went to Kentucky with John Hollon.

If not left by Charity, then by another women as a young child. Mahala married Willis Brewer in abt. 1822 in Ashe County, North Carolina and they moved to Kentucky. Some of her children may have been born in Tennessee. In 1830 Willis and Mahala were in the Estill County Census and in 1840 the Breathitt County Census.

Charity claimed the name of Mains on her marriage note to John Hollon, but no way to know if that was also Mahala's maiden name. It has been reported that a Floyd County clerk found a piece of paper lying loose in one of their document books that read---"I married John Hollon and Charity Mains ) today." I know this is possible because while researching in Morgan County we found many scraps of paper with marriages and permission to marry written on them.
