William came to Oregon County, Missouri with his claim of bounty land for service in the War with Mexico in 1847 as Private, Company H, 5th Infantry, Tennessee Volunteers. All of his earlier children were born in either McMinn County or Polk County, Tennessee.
Nicholas Denford Porter was born in Thomasville, Oregon County, Missouri in 30 Mar 1963. I believe his mother, Martha, died in childbirth but I cannot proof this with documentation or family information.
Nick's father then married Catherine Carolyn Jane Bowles Tankersley, widow of George Newton Tankersley from Lincoln County, Tennessee on 21 Feb 1866 in Oregon County, Missouri. They moved to Benton County, Missouri and had two sons of their own. Nick would ride his horse from Benton County to Fulton County, AR to visit his older brothers from the marriage of his father and mother, Martha. He stated that Carolyn was his stepmother but was the only mother he knew.
Martha has not documented grave or cemetery in Oregon County where I am fairly certain she is buried, but thought it was appropriate to record her life in Moten Cemetery, Mammoth Spring, Fulton County, AR where children, William Henry Clay Porter and Nicholas Denford Porter are buried.
Martha's father and mother were Elisha Dodson and Mary "Polly" Matlock Dodson. Both are buried in Polk County, Tennessee.
