Harold Briggs McKnight, the oldest living graduate of Marshall University, died Saturday, December 25, 1999, in Gwinnett Medical Center, Lawrenceville, GA. He was 97.
A resident of Suwanee, GA., he was born November 14, 1902, in Hebron, Pleasants County, WV., the son of the late William Enoch and Edith Briggs McKnight. He graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in chemistry from Marshall University, Huntington. He was principal at the Gauley Bridge High School, worked at Goodyear Tire and Rubber during World War II, worked for Pratt and Whitney Aircraft in West Palm Beach, Florida, during the 1960s and taught chemistry from 1968 to 1972 at Chesapeake High School, where he retired.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Fanny Atkinson McKnight; a son, Pete. Surviving are two sons, James W. and his wife, Cathy, of Suwanee, GA., and John A. and his wife Linda, of Destin, FL.; three daughters-in-laws, Joy Matthews McKnight of Decatur, GA., Catherine T. McKnight of Columbia, NC., Jane Harding McKnight Smith Spence of Atlanta, GA.; eight grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
Graveside services will be held at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday in Northview Cemetery, New Martinsville, WV., with the Rev. Matthew Q. Atkinson officiating. Arrangements by Iams Funeral Home, 833 Third St., New Martinsville, WV. [Wheeling News-Register, Wheeling, WV. 28 Dec 1999]
