Mary Jane Clark was born March 7, 1844 in Pulaski County, Arkansas the daughter of Edwin R. Clark and Hannah Kirkpatrick. She married William P. McCarty on March 15, 1863 in Webster County, Missouri. They had a daughter, Hannah McCarty born February 14, 1864 who died a few months later on April 14, 1864. William P. McCarty was court martialed and dismissed from the 11th Missouri Cavalry Volunteers with loss of all pay and allowances. The couple moved to Zanesville, Ohio in October, 1864. William P. McCarty abandoned his wife on May 8, 1865. She gave birth to their son William Clark McCarty on September 7, 1865 in Zanesville, Ohio. Mary Jane McCarty is in the 1870 Census at age 26 as the head of household occupation seamstress with her son living in Webster County, Missouri. There is a record of her divorce from William P. McCarty in Webster County, Missouri effective March 25, 1872. She is in the 1880 Census at age 36 as the head of household occupation dress maker living with her son in Anna, Union County, Illinois. She is in the 1900 Census at age 56 living in the household of her son William Clark McCarty in Saint Louis, Missouri. Mary Jane McCarty died September 4, 1938 in Saint Louis, Missouri and is buried in Jonesburg, Missouri. Her obituary appeared in the Warrenton Banner September 9, 1938, page 6.
