According to family stories handed down, Lewis was shot and killed out west in either, Oklahoma or Texas. According to a record I found, his wife, Nora claims Lewis was killed about 1898. I assume he was killed in or around, Georgetown, Williamson Co. TX, and, is most likely buried there.

Lewis had a son, Booten Whitaker born out of wedlock to Nancy Puckett. He then married Margaret Howard in 1883 and had a son, Cleveland Whittaker in 1886.

At some point, Lewis went on to Williamson Co. TX and married, Nora J. Ward in 1888 and fathered 3 more children:
Elijah Jackson Whitaker
James Volley Whitaker
Lena B. Whitaker

Much more research is needed on Lewis Whitaker to find his date of death and location.

*Note - I heard from the Public Library in Georgetown, TX (2017) and after much research, they came up empty handed on finding a record of Lewis' death.
