At age 10, Mary had infantile paralysis - polio. Her younger brother, Elbert, died about the same time.

Mary's father passed away in 1908 when she was 16 years old, and her mother remarried to Alexander Mills. Since she was crippled and could not work daily on the Mills farm, she went to stay with an aunt in Illinois.

She married Joseph Franklin 'Frank' Grabeal on December 14, 1911. Mary later married James Samuel Dalton on February 20, 1920. From this marriage, a daughter named Virginia Dalton was born. A son was also born, but did not survive.
