His family may have never received notice of his death. A muster card was located, indicating that he died in a hospital on 1 June 1863 in Chattanooga, TN.

His wife, Mary Appleton Cargile Yelverton, only lived two years after the war was over. On 4 October 1867, Mary died at the young age of 28. The little girls went to live with their Grandparents Gideon and Sarah Cargile. (See the 1870 census.) Little Isabella lived for one year longer—dying on 20 October 1868.

Martha married Joseph T. Ford. Their three infant sons only lived a few days. She died childless on 20 July 1905 in Jasper County, Mississippi.

Mary Ann (Mollie) Yelverton was born March 1864 and died in 1930. She married Napoleon B Holcomb.
It was believed that John's daughter, Mary was Mary Ann Yelverton Robinson; however, that Mary Yelverton's death certificate through Smith County death index records states she was the daughter of James Berry Yelverton Sr and Elizabeth Caraway Yelverton. The informant was her husband, and he would have been a been a credible source.

Mary Ann Yelverton Holcomb's records stated her father was born in Mississippi, which correlates with John Yelverton's birth (see 1850 & 1860 censuses). His brothers were born in North Carolina.
