For many years a prominent citizen of Rockingham County. He married Christina Kisling 12 Sept 1805. He commaned a company in the War of 1812. From 1835 to 1849 he was the County Surveyor of Rockingham. He also was editor of the Rockingham Register and engaged in the mercantile business. His store was the first in McGaheysville, being built in 1805. The children of Joseph and Christina were:
