SUDDEN DEATH OF A PIONEER
George Giles Passed Away Tuesday After a Short Illness.
An old and highly respected resident of Heber gave up the trials of an eventful life last Tuesday afternoon at 1:45 o'clock when the last spark of life filtered from the body of George Giles. Suddenly seized with apoplexy Monday morning between 2 and 3 o'clock, it was evident he could live but a short time and the end came as above stated with members of the family, near relatives and friends surrounding the bedside.
The deceased was born at Epperstone, Nottinghamshire, England, May 19, 1823. In the year 1847 he led to the alter Mary Greenwood with whom he was joined in the holy bonds of matrimony, and who has been his helpmate in sharing the trials and tribulations of life for the past fifty-one years. His aged wife almost 75 years old is left to mourn the sudden demise of her life long companion, together with two sons, Thomas and Charles, and one daughter, Mrs. Joe Moulton. Besides these near relatives the deceased leaves three brothers and two sisters to succeed him in life, all of whom are residents of this city except one brother and one sister who reside in the lower valley.
The deceased and wife arrived in the United States in the fall of 1850, residing in New Orleans until the following spring when they moved to Burlington, Iowa. Here Mr. Giles learned his trade blacksmithing, and resided until the spring of 1856, when he took his family to Council Bluffs and on the 4th of June following set out to cross the plains for Utah. A company of fifty wagons started on this date, to which the deceased and his brothers and families belonged and traveled under Capt. E.B. Tripp. The company arrived at Salt Lake City on the 15th day of the following August and five days later the deceased moved his family to Provo. Here they resided until the spring of 1860 when they located in this valley and helped make it what it is today.
The funeral was held in the Stake House Wednesday afternoon and the large attendance partially demonstrated the high esteem in which the deceased was held by the entire community. The remains were laid to rest in the cemetery amid impressive ceremonies.
Mrs. Giles desires to express her sincere gratefulness to all who so kindly rendered her assistance in her hour of deepest trouble.
