John married his wife, Florence Blackman, on January 6, 1905, in Graves County. By 1910 they had her two children from an earlier marriage (who had taken John's surname) living with them and also two of their own children, Lucille and Porter. Florence died on October 14, 1916 (at age 41) and was buried in the Union Cemetery in Fulton, KY. By 1920 John and the children were living with his mother, Lucy, in Wingo, KY. No later census records can be found for John, but he died on 20 December 1947 in Ballard County, KY, of congestive heart failure. No record of burial location.

His daughter, Lucille (1907-1999), settled in Ballard County, KY, with her husband, Lloyd Bailey (1904-1970).

His son, George Porter Mullins (1909-1997), moved to Jackson, Michigan, at age 19 and lived with his half-sister Abbie (1902-1992) and her husband James Holt (1895-1968); he got married almost immediately to a young woman named Marian (1911-1986), a native of Indiana, and had a long marriage to her. They are buried in Jackson, MI.
