Born May 16, 1953, in Fort Madison, Iowa, he was the son of Gervase and Darlene Angell Bentler. On July 18, 1984 in Colorado he married Sandra Lee Mendez.
Survivors include one son Shawn Bentler of Quincy, Illinois, mother Darlene Bentler of Houghton, father Gervase Bentler and stepmother Mollie Bentler of Bonaparte, four brothers Jim (Diane) Bentler of Rowlett, Texas, Dan (Michelle) Bentler of Fort Madison, Dave Bentler of Fort Madison, Gregg (Carol) Bentler of Iowa City, two sisters Julie and her companion Nancy Engelhardt of Morning Sun, Lisa (Bob) Fitzsimmons of Coralville, granddaughters Chloe and Avaley, and several nieces and nephews. Mike and his wife Sandra were AFS parents to Felicitas Grabner from Austria.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents George and Ina Angell and Fred and Veronica Bentler.
Mike and Sandra owned and operated Mt. Hamill Lumber and Elevator, Mt. Pleasant Lumber and Donnellson Elevator. He was an avid outdoor sportsman, a wonderful husband, father and brother who loved spending time with his family and friends. He was a member of the Advisory Board of Holiday Kitchens, the Marketing Committee of Southeast Iowa Builders Association, The National Kitchens Bath Associates, Pheasants Forever and the Pope Young Club.
He graduated from Fort Madison High School and attended college in Kirksville, Missouri. He will be greatly missed and always loved by family, friends and the surrounding communities.
