Samuel William Clipp, M.D., age 85, of Pennsburg, died Thurs., April 21, at Grand View Hospital, after a long illness. He was the beloved husband of Julie Clipp, for 21 years.

Sam was born in Binghamton, NY, and grew up in Ardmore PA. He was the son of the late Roger and Marjorie (Allerton) Clipp.

He graduated from Episcopal Academy, Merion, Trinity College, Hartford, Connecticut and Temple Medical School, Class of 1956. Dr Clipp was a Navy Veteran and he received certification as a Navy Flight Surgeon from U.S. Navy School of Aviation Medicine, Pensacola, FL, in 1957. He served in Niagara Falls, NY and at Willow Grove Naval Air Station. He completed one year of a residency in pediatrics at St Christopher's Hospital for Children in Philadelphia, and then completed a residency in radiology at Coatesville Veterans Administration Hospital. Locally, he was a Radiologist at Grand View Hospital, Sellersville, from 1966-1995. Dr. Clipp came out of retirement at age 70 and returned part time to Grand View Hospital until age 80.

As a child and teenager, he spent summers working on his grandfather's dairy farm in Port Crane, NY where he fell in love with aviation by watching the airplanes at nearby Chenango Bridge Airport. Sam took flying lessons there and at age 16 he soloed his first flight and earned his private pilot's license. Sam was a lifelong pilot with a special love for antique aircrafts. He owned and flew a number of small planes over the years, and enjoyed sharing his love of flying by giving rides to friends. He donated one of his planes, at 1941 Culver Cadet, to the Golden Age Air Museum in Bethel PA. Sam was also an accomplished glider pilot and was a member of Philadelphia Glider Council, Hilltown. As a glider pilot, he earned the Diamond Gold Badge. Sam's passion for the thrill of flight was in contrast to his quiet personality. He was a caring and generous man.

In addition to his wife Julie, he is survived by his children: Scott Clipp (Barb) Green Lane, Peter Clipp (Leslie) Perkiomenville, Jay Clipp (Joann) Quakertown, John Clipp Jonesboro, GA, Michael Ralston, Sunnyvale, CA, Casey Ralston, Hatfield, four grandchildren: Michael Clipp, Hayden Clipp, Brianna Clipp, Piper Clipp, a sister Bette Auchinache, daughter-in-law, Kathy Clipp and two nieces.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend his viewing and funeral, Tues., April 26, at Williams-Bergey-Koffel Funeral Home, Inc., 667 Harleysville Pike, Telford, Franconia Twp. where viewing will take place from 5-7PM with Funeral Service beginning at 7:00PM. Burial will be private.
