He was in Company B under captain John Winfield. He enlisted at Harrisonburg in April of 1861 and was mustered in at Harper's Ferry. He was discharged in Feb 1863 with chronic rhuematism and was instead put on inactive military service as a tax collector in Rockingham County. When the war ended he applied for a Federal Pardon and took the Amnesty Oath in July 1865.
The son of Allen Devier. He was one the best known citizens of Rockingham. Giles was a publisher and postmaster. He belonged to the S.B. Gibbons Camp of Confederate Veterans. He married to Catherine Yount 3 Dec 1846.

Harrisonburg, Va., - Sept 3
Giles DeVier, for many years publisher of the Rockingham Resgister, and postmaster of Harrisonburg under the second Cleveland administration, died early this morning after an illness of several years. Mr. DeVier was born in Rockingham County in July 1820, and few men have been more widely know in this section of the Shenandoah Valley. He was member of the Ashby Battallion during the Civil War. He leaves a widow and two daughters - Mrs. R. M. Wunder of Shenandoah County, and Miss Hortense DeVier of Harrisonburg.
