He was born in McAlester to William and Esther (Sheppard) Blackbird, who were both born in England. He died at his home in McAlester at the age of 54. At one time he worked for the Oller Heating Company.

Richard L. Blackbird, 52, former McAlester School Board member and for many years the general mechanic at Oklahoma State Penitentiary, died at his home, 400 West Adams Avenue, this morning. Funeral arrangements, as yet incomplete, will be announced later by the Chaney Funeral Home. He is survived by his widow; one son, R. J. Blackbird, now located at Langley Field, Va.; two brothers, Robert Blackbird of Henryetta, William Blackbird of Haileyville; two sisters, Mrs. Elizabeth McInnes and Mrs. Mary Troby, both of McAlester.

Funeral services for R. L. Blackbird, 52, who died at his home at 400 West Adams Avenue yesterday morning will be held at 3 o'clock Monday afternoon at the Chaney Chapel. A. C. Grimes, minister of the Church of Christ, will officiate. Pallbearers will be Frank Redpath, Alex Watson, Dr. L. C. Kuykendall, J.M. Hickman, Wallace Bond, all of McAlester, and Clarence J. Bunyard of Durant. Honorary pallbearers will be Dr. C. V. Kieser, Dr. A. R. Stough, Pink Johnson, M. F. Newman, Joe Weingarten, Dudley Clement, and Jack Turner. Mr. Blackbird was general mechanic at Oklahoma State Penitentiary for 16 years and later was a golf professional at the McAlester Country Club. He was a defense worker until about four months ago, when he was taken ill.
