Lydia Barrett was a daughter, the eleventh and last child, of Philip and Miriam Sipple Barrett of Kent Co. Delaware. Her father, Philip Barrett, gave the land and funding for the building of Barrett's Chapel near Frederica, Delaware. The historic Church is the oldest still existing church built by and for Methodist worship in the United States.

Lydia Barrett married Matthew Patton, Sr., also of Kent Co. Delaware, and they relocated to Caroline County, Maryland.
