William Thomas "Billy" Strayhorn was an American jazz composer, pianist and arranger, best known for his successful collaboration with bandleader and composer Duke Ellington lasting nearly three decades. His compositions include Take the 'A' Train, Chelsea Bridge, and Lush Life.

Mercer Ellington, son of the Duke, introduced Aaron Bridgers to Strayhorn as a perspective "partner". A year after their meeting, both Strayhorn and Bridgers moved in together. They were describe as being very affectionate toward one another. Even more importantly, those who knew them as a couple were respectful of the two men and their relationship.

Bridgers moved to Paris in 1947.
