ODESSA A memorial service for Helen E. Hadley will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, January 27, at Sherwood Church of Christ, 4900 N. Dixie, Odessa, Texas, with Lynn Money officiating, after a private graveside service and burial.
Helen Elizabeth Hadley, 88, was born May 23, 1925, in Eastport, Maine, to Arthur and Mary Farris. She attended schools in Eastport and Limestone, Maine, and graduated as Salutatorian of the Class of 1942 at Shead Memorial High School in Eastport. After graduation, she worked in a local bank and in 1945 met John Paul Hadley, a handsome young Navy Seabee, at the USO. They were married June 18, 1945, in Eastport.
Early in their marriage, they lived in Searcy, Arkansas, where John graduated from Harding Christian College in 1950. From May of 1952 to May of 1954, John, Helen, and their children were missionaries in Germany. When they returned to the states, John began his career in the petrochemical industry, a job that took John and Helen to Algeria for 3 years in the late 1970s and enabled them to visit Scotland, her mother's native country.
Though quiet, modest, and shy, she possessed a keen intelligence and a quick wit. She was an avid reader and enjoyed doing crossword puzzles and jumbles with her husband well into their 80s. She also enjoyed working in her yard, growing beautiful flowers, and keeping the outside as well cared for as the inside of her home. She had an extensive collection of bells and teapots, and lovingly documented the lives of her loved ones by assembling many albums of carefully labeled photos. She had a great interest in family genealogy, and enjoyed reading the large volume of information gathered by her sister, Hazel.
Helen was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother, and a hospitable, dedicated, and excellent homemaker. A member at Sherwood Church of Christ since 1958, she served as a Bible class coordinator and Bible class teacher for many years. She was a humble and gentle Christian servant and an example of faithfulness, a true Proverbs 31 woman.
Services are entrusted to Frank W. Wilson Funeral Home, where viewing is welcome through Sunday.
