Alvard R. Kiler

Al Kiler, 95, died of natural causes on April 24, 2016.
Our dad was born in Boise on June 13, 1920 to William J. Kiler and Emma Isaak Kiler. He attended Boise schools and graduated from Boise High School in 1938. He worked at various jobs to pay his tuition to Boise Junior College, graduating in 1941. He was a member of BJC's Intercollegiate Knights and played on one of the college's early football teams.
In August, 1941, he went to work for Morrison Knudsen Company on Midway Island, building airfields and harbor facilities. He was at Midway when it was shelled by the Japanese on the same day Pearl Harbor was attacked. While he was at Midway, his father died of complications from injuries suffered in World War I. Though he was offered an army commission while at Midway, Dad declined in order to return home and be with his mother, knowing it meant that he would be drafted. He subsequently joined the Army Air Corps and was sent to Hawaii to work as a military occupation specialist, relocating personnel from battle-fractured units.
He was discharged in February, 1946, and returned to Boise, where he met the love of his life, Josephine Foster, at CC Anderson lunch counter. They were married September 1, 1946, and remained together for 64 years.
Al and Jo spent the next few years at the University of Idaho in Moscow, where he graduated with a degree in Wildlife Biology. Son Keith and Daughter Lynn Dee were born in Moscow. He returned to Boise and worked for six years for Idaho Department of Fish and Game as a bird biologist in Boise and later eastern Idaho. He resigned to accept a position in Boise with the Idaho Department of Employment. While still working, he earned a Masters degree in counseling from Idaho State University. Daughter Kathleen Kay and two more sons Kirk and Kelly were born which rounded out the Kiler clan. Dad retired in 1981.
Dad was an Eagle Scout and a Scout Master for Troop 7 for many years and was active in the Bannock County Sportsman Association, Ada County Fish and Game League, Idaho Bird Hunters, Idaho Wildlife Federation, Elks, and Poachers Club.
A proud Bronco, Dad was a lifetime member and past president of the Boise State Alumni Association and a lifetime member of the Bronco Athletic Association. He was a member of the Varsity B Club and was recognized as an honorary captain for a Boise State football game. He was also chosen to be a juror on the Idaho Public Television production "Trial of the Century."
Dad loved his family, hunting, fishing, camping and family gatherings. He was a voracious reader who enjoyed starting his mornings with coffee and the newspaper. His two favorite sports teams were Boise State Football and the Seattle Mariners Baseball.
Dad was preceded in death by his wife, Josephine; his parents; his sister, Coleen Hall; son-in-law, Steven Jensen; and grandson, William Bradley Doane.
Al is survived by brother-in-law, Edward Foster; sisters-in law, Patricia Lewis and Betty (Kenny) Hames; children: Keith (Gayle), Lynn Dee Jensen, Kay, Kirk (Olga), and Kelly. Grandchildren: Shaun Jensen (Jessica), Shanna McKnight (Cory), Sunshine Day (J.P.), Joseph (Dana), Justin (Amanda), Corby, Jordan, MacKenzie. Great-grandchildren: Luke, Chase, Cole, Macy, Alle, Josie, Mylee, Brooke, Preston, Hayden and many nieces and nephews.
A graveside service will be conducted at the Idaho State Veterans Cemetery on Horseshoe Bend Road near Eagle on May 2 at 10:00 AM.
A celebration of Dad's life will be held at the Allen Noble Hall of Fame, next to BSU's Albertans stadium at 11:30 AM.
The family would like to thank Theresa Kramer and all the other caregivers who comforted him during the last few years of his life.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the MK Nature Center or BSU Alumni Scholarship Fund.
