"It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our much beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend, Harry DeWolf.

Harry died at home with his wife by his side on April 24, 2016, following a brief illness. He was born on March 9, 1925, in Placerville, Calif., to Bert and Nellie DeWolf. He lived in and loved Diamond Springs, Calif., his entire life. He attended Diamond Springs Grammar School and graduated from El Dorado County High School in 1942.

Harry and Georgia “Peggy” Arnold married in 1943. Shortly thereafter he entered the military and served as an Army corporal during World War II in New Guinea and the Philippines. Returning from military duty, he and Peggy had three children, Dan and twins Janet and Judy.

In the early years, after he returned from overseas, Harry worked at Caldor Lumber Co., the telephone company, Pickering Lumber Co. in Sonora and as a road crewman for El Dorado County. Among the jobs he performed at Caldor Lumber Co. was the one he loved the most; he “fired” on a railroad shay with Don McAffee on the train that hauled logs from the Caldor Camp at Dog Town above Leoni Meadows to the mill in Diamond Springs. This secured his life-long love of narrow gauge steam engines.

In 1959 Harry was given an opportunity to partner with Ora McCowan in Mac’s Rural Garbage Service. Then in 1960 “Mac” decided to pursue a business venture in Nebraska so Harry asked his childhood friend Ozzie Scariot to join him and they began their remarkable 48-year business partnership, forming Foothill Disposal Service. In 1973 they purchased Placerville Garbage Service from the Rohrer family and became El Dorado Disposal Service. Through many years of hard work the business thrived and grew and eventually employed more than 120 people. The business was sold in 1998.

Harry married his soul mate Judy in 1973. They recently celebrated their 43rd anniversary. They worked together in the business and enjoyed traveling across the country and eventually around the world. They had a special love of the South Pacific and Africa. They spent part of each fall in Montana fishing with a group of cherished friends and were eventually joined by several of their children. Wherever they traveled they met and made friends. And, as evidenced by their vacation photos, Harry inevitably attracted a stray dog or cat. He also amazed his family and friends by his uncanny ability to recall exactly what he ate on any given day of a trip or special occasion.

Known, admired and loved for his honesty and generosity, Harry leaves a legion of dear friends. Returning from any trip; near or far, short or long, he would always comment, “I wish we could have stayed a couple of days longer.” With heavy hearts we now say that to him.

Harry is survived by his wife, Judy; sister, Kate Hartel of Ashland, Ore.; his children, Dan (Kelly) of Placerville, Janet Whitaker (Paul LaMere) of El Dorado, Calif., Judy DeWolf (Alan Supan) of San Jose, Calif., Vicki Elliott (Wayne) of Modesto, Calif., Scott Petty (Lynne) of Placerville and Kelly Boudreau (Mike Hale) of Citrus Heights, Calif. He also leaves grandchildren, Lindsay, Steven, Dana Lee (Matt), Nate, Barrett, Kyle (Stephanie), Chris (Katy), Elizabeth, Katie Rose, Wesley and Joshua. In addition he has seven great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Bert and Nellie DeWolf; his sister, Gladys Crilly; and son, Tim Petty.

A gathering of family, friends and co-workers will be held on Sunday, May 22 at 3:30 p.m., at the American Legion Hall, 4561 Greenstone Road in Placerville. Food and beverages will be provided. Remembrances may be made to your favorite charity."
