Sadly, shortly after Ouida's father died in 1913 her step-mother committed her to the Austin State School. Ouida was later transferred to the Mexia State School and lived there until her death in 1962. Supposedly, no family history records existed when Ouida died so her remains were turned over to the Texas State Anatomical Board where they were used for medical research.
