Donald Ray Boles, 80, died on Monday, December 28, 2015 at Midland Memorial Hospital in Midland, Texas from a sudden cardiac arrest. He leaves his wife of 57 years, Carolyn (Hailey) Boles; his daughter; Larea Arnett and husband Eric Arnett; his son, Christopher Dixson-Boles and wife Jade Kelly Dixson-Boles; grandchildren, Abby Dixson-Boles and Asher Dixson-Boles; and by many close friends.

Born in Scurry, Texas, the son of Raymond and Zelma (Polson) Boles, he had lived in Midland for 38 years.

In his early years, Don was a basketball player and coach. He attended college on a basketball scholarship, and was a member of a 1955 basketball team who won an NAIA National Championship. They were later inducted into the Texas A & M Commerce Athletic Hall of Fame. He received his Bachelor's degree from East Texas State College and his Master's degree in Math from Kansas State University in Emporia.

Don and Carolyn met in Bardwell and were married in Garrett, Texas on May 30, 1958. He taught math for over 20 years, at Bardwell High School, Lancaster High School, East Chambers, The Kincaid School, and Andrews High School. His teaching career also included great success with coaching a competitive math team with numerous state champions and introducing a computer science course in the late 1970s. Don was selected UIL Coach of the Decade in Number Sense in the 1970s. In addition to his teaching, Don did consulting work in computer programming. This led to his move to Midland in 1977, where he began working for a prominent Midland entrepreneur, focusing at first on computer programming and then on investments and financial decision making. He was president of Kagin-3 Company. Don was known for his wit, humor, and generosity to others. He served as an elder at North A Church of Christ. He opened his home many times during his life to students, friends, and relatives and was known as a great encourager. He was a role model to many and will be greatly missed.
