He was a 1937 graduate of Jackson High School and member of the varsity football team. John served his country during World War II as a Sergeant in the U.S. Army Combat Signal Corps and was part of invasion forces in North Africa, Algeria, Naples, Foggia, Rome, Arno and the Northern Appines. He was awarded five bronze stars, the Bronze Arrowhead and proud to have helped liberate his father's hometown of Mignano, Caserta, Italy.
After the war he returned to Jackson and worked for the New York Central Railroad where he met his wife, Louise. He retired as Yard Master with 35 years of service.
In retirement he enjoyed farming and gardening that enabled him to contribute to the Inter Faith Shelter and other food banks.
John was preceded in death by his parents Carl and Beatrice (Schafer) DePalma, wife of 54 years Louise (Eidymt), sons Christopher Gedman and Raymond Gedman, a sister, brother, nephew, niece and great-granddaughter.
He is survived by daughter in law, Evelyn Gedman of Albion, MI, special friend Bess Perkins of Jackson, MI, 8 grandchildren, 9 great grand children, 4 great-great grandchildren and 23 nieces and nephews.
Service was April 16, 2016 at the Watson Funeral Chapel in Jackson, Reverend Dr. Jeremy Williams officiating; interment followed in East Rives Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Jackson Inter Faith Shelter, Jackson, MI in John's memory.
