He was a 1948 graduate of Hutchinson High School, attended Hutchinson Junior College, and Salt City Business College. Richard was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, a United States Army Veteran, and retired in 1985, from Santa Fe Railroad, with over 30 years of service.
On Aug. 20, 1954, he married Peggy Lou Birket in Abbyville. She survives.
Other survivors include: their children, Scott (Robyn) of Wichita, April Connelly of Blue Springs, Mo.; step grandchildren, Rochelle (Zack) Helgesen and Riley (Aaron) Babbidge; step great-grandchildren, Brenna and Thor Helgesen, and Augustine Babbidge, all of Wichita.
Richard was preceded in death by his parents and an infant grandson, Ryan Bailey.
Graveside service will be 11 a.m. Saturday, April 23, 2016, in Abbyville Cemetery, with the Rev. Dr. Kim Biery presiding. Friends may call from 1 to 9 p.m. today, with the family to receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. at Elliott Mortuary. Memorial gifts may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, in care of Elliott Mortuary, 1219 N. Main, Hutchinson, Kan. 67501.
