Steward Johnson enjoyed hunting, fishing and family reunions. He was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross (DSC) in 1943 for bravery in the battle of Salerno (Italy). From his citation: "Sergeant's Johnson's extraordinary heroism in the face of gravest danger reflects great credit both to himself and to the Army of the United States". He was a member of Company C, 142nd Infantry, 36th Division, U.S. Army.
