Death certificate and obituary list May's birthplace as Paw Paw, Michigan. However, all census records, except for 1930, list her birthplace as New York.

May was a teacher in Petoskey, Michigan for over 20 years, from at least 1880 through 1905. She married John McMillan on March 6, 1906 in Emmet County, Michigan. John was a widower. He preceded her in death, on April 17, 1929.

Former Teacher Passes Monday

Mrs. Marie I. McMillan, known to many as Auntie May Douglas, a member of the Petoskey Public School faculty for many years, died last evening after a long illness.

Many of the city's prominent business men attended classes under her direction and received much of their elementary education at her hands.

Born in Paw Paw, Michigan, August 28, 1856, Mrs. McMillan came to Petoskey nearly 50 years ago. She was married to John McMillan who died several years ago.

Surviving are two nieces and one grand niece; three step sons and a step daughter; John McMillan and Mrs. Mary Setchell, of Mendota, Ill., Robert McMillan of Chicago, and Will McMillan of Coldwater.

Burial will take place at Mancelona.
