Hugh Swearengin was born in 1776 in Anson Co., NC to Van Swearingen and Delila. Van was a Revolutionary War soldier (pvt., Capt. Thomas Harris's Co., 4th Reg. North Carolina continental line). Hugh's first known wife was Priscilla. He and Priscilla went to Jackson Co., TN about 1811 where they joined the Spring Creek Baptist Church in 1814. Hugh was accompanied by his younger brother William and followed later by his sisters Elizabeth Wiggins and Holley Jane Virginia Bean. Hugh served in the War of 1812 under Maj. William Woodfolk and Capt. John Sutton. Hugh and Priscilla had sons: Eli, William P., James, Levi, Hugh, and Wade. They had daughters: Katherine and Amelia. They probably had a couple of other daughters and possibly another son. Priscilla died about 1830 and Hugh next married Nancy Craig who was about 30 years his junior and had sons: Vance and John Smith and had daughters: Pricilla Adaline, Mary, Lucy, Amanda, Harriet, and probably two others whose names are not known. Hugh was still living in 1860 as he appeared in the Jackson Co., TN census but apparently died shortly after for his children by his second wife left Tennessee during the Civil War going to Kentucky and Illinois.

Hugh's grave is in the NW corner of the cemetery and is marked by a weathered slate stone bearing the only readable inscription "born in 1776" and has been identified by local descendants as Hugh's stone. Hugh Swearengin and his sons James, Levi, and William at one time owned the farm the cemetery was on. His son William sold the land in 1851. Hugh's first wife Priscilla is also supposed to be buried in this cemetery.
