Obituary:
John H. Gindhart , former chief of surgery at Helene Fuld Medical Center, died Friday at his home in Trenton. He was 73.
Dr. Gindhart , who was born in Woodcrest, Burlington County, most recently divided his time between his apartment on West State Street in Trenton and Cavalier Farms at Rileyville, Va. After practicing in Luray, Va., he moved to Trenton, where he was chief of surgery at Helene Fuld in the 1940s and 1950s.
He attended public schools in Hartford, Conn., and graduated from Moorestown High School. He received his undergraduate degree from Temple University and obtained his medical degree from Hahnemann Medical College in 1938. He completed his internship the next year at McKinley Hospital, which is now Helene Fuld Medical Center.
Dr. Gindhart was a field-hospital surgeon with the Navy in the Pacific during World War II.
He was an anatomy instructor at Hahnemann Medical College and emeritus chief of surgery at Page Memorial Hospital in Luray. He was on the board of directors of the Rescue Mission; a past member of the Civitan Club and the Rotary Club of Luray, and a former member of the American Medical Association, the Mercer County Medical Society, the New Jersey Medical Society, the Northern Virginia Medical Society and the Virginia Medical Society.
He also was a member of the Ashlar Lodge of the Masonic Order, the John Hart Society and the Sons of the American Revolution.
He is survived by his wife, Dr. Lillian R. Lord Gindhart ; two daughters, Carole Adams of Trenton, and Mary E. Hodge of Radnor; two sons, John H. Gindhart of Mahwah, N.J., and Christopher Gindhart of Trenton, and two sisters, Mary G. Roebling of Trenton and Margaret Finley of Haddonfield. He also was the brother of the late Dr. Floyd Gindhart .
Services will be at noon Tuesday at All Saints Chapel, Trinity Cathedral, West State Street and Overbrook Avenue in Trenton.
Entombment will be in Harleigh Cemetery, Camden.
A viewing will be held from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. tomorrow at M. William Murphy Funeral Home, 149 N. Warren St., Trenton.
