Son of James and Hannah Gibson.

Married Nancy Jane Daughterty on September 11, 1843 in Morgan County, IL.
They were the parents of fourteen children. Twelve children survived until adulthood.
Surviving children: Mrs Serilda Gates of Girard, Mrs. Sarah Garst of Girard, Mrs. Lizzie Stowe of Girard, Henry Gibson of Girard, George Gibson of Girard, Cullen Gibson of Springfield, Isaac Gibson of Pawnee, John Gibson of Greenfield, Mrs. Rinda Showalter of McPherson, Kansas, Mrs. Hannah Wirt of Virden; and several grandchildren, great grandchildren and great great grandchildren.

He was the pastor of United Brethren Church near Girard for forty-five years.
